Agoda Summer Internship Program

We always welcome fresh ideas and new approaches to problem-solving. That’s what makes the Agoda Summer Internship Program such a yearly highlight. Through this paid internship, students from top Thai and international universities spend ten weeks working with our world-class teams.

In 2024, 122 summer interns joined us across 9 departments to work with diverse colleagues on projects that matter, in our largest office in Bangkok. Read on to see what they got up to!

Agoda 101: Intern Onboarding Day

The journey started at the end of May with Agoda 101: Intern Onboarding Day, an event for our new cohort to break the ice, learn more about the company, and pick up resources to start their summer off on the right foot. The interns also met our CEO Omri Morgenshtern, who shared Agoda’s vision, goals, and purpose of bridging the world through travel in his Ask Me Anything session, along with VP of Marketing Kris Suebjaklap and Supply Senior Country Director Pierre Honne.

Intern Showcase

The Intern Showcase allowed the interns to truly shine and present their achievements to an audience of directors, senior managers, and other leaders from across the company. Our interns confidently presented what they’d been working on, their key learnings, suggestions for future improvements, and their recommendations for continuing these projects after their internships concluded. It was fantastic to see how far our interns have come, and the impact they’ve made in just ten weeks.

National Intern Day

National Intern Day falls on July 25, just in time for our summer interns’ last week. It was the perfect time to unite, honor their achievements, and close out an eventful summer. Awards and certificates were given out to recognize our interns’ accomplishments, and we enjoyed a panel of former interns who are now full-time Agodans who shared their experiences and tips for navigating the intern conversion process. The event ended with a quiz and scavenger hunt on our office floor, making it a day to remember.

Hear from our interns

As our interns wrap up their time with Agoda, we caught up with them to hear about their experiences and memorable moments from this summer. We hope you enjoy reading about their journeys as much as we enjoyed having them with us!

Full Stack Software Engineer Intern, Agoda Homes

Agoda is truly a data-driven company: every decision is based on experimentation and statistics. I interned with the NHA-TEPEE team, which develops and maintains Agoda Homes, our rental platform. I used React for frontend development and C# and ASP.NET for backend management. One of my standout projects was revamping the Agoda Homes landing page to streamline the user experience into a single onboarding flow. Seeing my code go live and our new page displayed for actual use was incredibly rewarding.

While I learned technical skills like React, Git, SQL, C#, and ASP.NET, my most important learning was the Scrum framework. I now understand the iterative process of modern software development and how important it is to communicate clearly. I learned that coding is not an individualistic endeavor but a collaborative effort involving many stakeholders. Rather than being isolated in cubicles, we worked in an open office that encouraged constant communication and teamwork.

My most memorable moment: Working on a complex migration task during a mob coding session. It was our first task as a team, and I was completely lost initially. The team guided me and reassured me that there was no need to be ‘greng jai’ (Thai: worried about inconveniencing others), as I could always ask for help. This experience set the tone for the rest of my internship and made me confident I could succeed at Agoda.

Project Management Intern, Customer Experience Group Global Service Verticals (CEG GSV)

My favorite thing about Agoda is the people: everyone is supportive and fosters an environment of growth and learning. I interned in the Flights and New Funnels team and worked to enhance the customer experience by streamlining flight booking processes and improving the new user funnel. I got to work on projects like optimizing the flight booking user experience and developing strategies to boost conversion rates in the new user funnel.

I gained valuable skills in project management and data analysis using Excel and SQL, focusing on data-driven decision-making. My manager was instrumental in my growth, providing regular feedback and helpful insights. As project managers, PowerPoint is our bread and butter, and he taught me how to make impactful presentations and improve my leadership skills.  I appreciated being able to take ownership of my projects, embrace experimentation, and strive for excellence while maintaining integrity.

My most memorable moment: Presenting my initiatives to the product owners. They took them seriously, and I felt truly valued – not just as an intern but as a contributing team member.

Full Stack/Backend Software Engineer Intern, Hiring Tools

My team focuses on integrating generative AI and other machine-learning techniques to streamline Agoda’s hiring process. Taking ownership is a big deal at Agoda. As an intern, I received a project that was a key goal for the quarter—setting up the back office for the hiring tool. It felt like a massive task at first because I had to reach out to different people, ask for help from other departments, and talk to the DevOps team independently. I handled everything from vault, pipeline, and deployment, creating frontend pages for job pool listings and forms, backend development for those forms, and integrating the frontend and backend. What I loved most was the achievement-oriented culture. We focus more on productivity and deliverable tasks than counting office hours.

Through weekly discussions with the People team, I learned about our product goals and user expectations. Meetings with our Director of Engineering gave me a broader perspective on the project’s direction and long-term impact. On the technical side, I learned a ton — from setting up a brand-new hiring tool back office (covering secret management, Docker, deployment, CI/CD pipelines to picking up new frameworks and languages like Kotlin, Scala, Spring Boot, Play frameworks, MySQL, and PlayWright test. Plus, I improved my skills in React, TypeScript, and Redux.

My most memorable moment: Working with a great, supportive team. Eating lunch with everyone always recharged my energy for the afternoon.

Talent Business Partner Intern, Talent Business Partners

During my internship with the TBP team, I worked on many exciting Learning and Development projects, such as aGROWda, GrowAspire, the People Offsite, and Agoda Leap. I loved collaborating with many different people and teams across the company, which pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me learn a lot quickly. I improved my teamwork and communication skills and gained insights into different working styles, which will be invaluable in the future.

The working culture at Agoda is fun and exciting, and everyone is incredibly friendly and open to helping one another. This experience was rounded out by the excellent guidance and mentorship from my manager and team members. They encouraged me to reflect on my daily experiences to make the most of my learning journey and were very patient in teaching me new skills.

My most memorable moment: Getting to know the amazing People team and making so many great new friends. Building these friendships made my experience even more enjoyable.

Full Stack Software Engineer Intern, SEO

This internship broadened my perspective as a Software Engineer. It wasn’t just about coding but about collaborating within a large, diverse environment. I was part of the SEO team, which focuses on site optimization, improving content and internal links, and monitoring performance issues to ensure optimal rankings and visibility. I had the chance to build a UI tool to automate internal workflows for the team and consolidate resources for existing projects, improving our overall maintainability.

I got hands-on experience with new programming languages and realized that a solid understanding of code structure makes it easier to pick up new technologies. Moreover, I learned that being a good software engineer isn’t just about writing code; it’s also about having strong communication skills. At Agoda, everyone is encouraged to share their ideas and contribute to the company’s success.

The mentorship I received was exceptional, with my supervisor and senior team members always accessible and encouraging. They emphasized the importance of asking questions and guided me on best practices, helping me grow personally and professionally. My favorite thing about working at Agoda was the diversity. In every meeting, I heard smart ideas and perspectives from colleagues of different backgrounds and found new ways to look at the world.

My most memorable moment: Successfully launching the tool I developed, which allowed the team to focus on their core responsibilities instead of handling tasks manually. My senior even joked that the world had become futuristic with my tool. It was a light-hearted moment that touched my heart, seeing the tangible results of my hard work positively impact the team.

Project Management Intern, Customer Experience Group Global Service Verticals (CEG GSV)

I wish this experience could last forever because I’ve enjoyed every moment! Everyone values direct feedback and owns their work. Agoda is a great place to grow and learn, and I’ve had many opportunities to make a real impact. Plus, the flexibility makes it easier to balance work and life.

I worked in the Standard Operating Procedure group, where we aimed to create and refine standard operating procedures for customer service agents. I was responsible for analyzing specific case reasons, evaluating how well our self-service tools served customers, and identifying opportunities to optimize the handling process. This work was about improving efficiency and reducing agents’ time on each case.

I’ve learned to make decisions by extracting, analyzing, and using data to make solid recommendations. I also learned SQL, which helps me pull data from big databases and make sense of it. Being proactive and asking many questions has helped me move forward faster.

When I first joined, I felt lost and needed a lot of help to familiarize myself with all the systems and tools. My manager encouraged me to explore and develop ideas on my own first, and then he would guide me in the right direction. This allowed me to learn through trial and error, which was invaluable for my growth. I also had a buddy who was a project associate. Together, they gave me a super well-rounded learning experience.

My most memorable moment: Working with all the other interns. Since the Customer Experience Group (CEG) is so massive, it felt like I had 23 classmates, which brought a unique energy and camaraderie to the office. I genuinely looked forward to coming to work every day because of them.

Full Stack Software Engineer Intern, Marketing Backbone

I was part of the Marketing Backbone team, which serves content pages to customers and provides a platform to partners. I worked on several exciting projects, including creating and rerouting a new component for a white-label client’s terms of use page and migrating the Attribution Scheduler to a private cloud. I was assigned a mentor for each project, who provided technical and business-related context and assisted me with any blockers. I developed many new technical skills with their support, such as GitLab pipelines and modern design patterns like dependency injection.

Agoda has an inclusive, open culture that encourages input from all team members, regardless of experience or seniority. I liked that everyone could contribute freely to the team’s success without feeling held back.

My most memorable moment: When my mentor took leave for a week, he ensured another team member had the context knowledge to help me, showing the team’s dedication to supporting each other.

Supply Tech Partnerships Intern, Tech Partnerships Team

The Tech Partnerships team optimizes partner performance and ensures seamless integration between Agoda and property interfaces. My role involved two main projects: the reactivation project, where I helped design and implement workflows to address technical issues with accommodations, and a benchmarking study of channel manager partnerships across other OTAs to identify opportunities for Agoda. These projects allowed me to develop and apply advanced Excel, basic SQL, and effective time management skills while also gaining a comprehensive view of corporate dynamics and practices.

Agoda feels like a place where multicultural scientists gather! Everyone is kind, experienced, and happy to share their knowledge. My manager encouraged me and my fellow intern to take ownership of our work and learn new things. When we said we wanted to learn more advanced SQL, she sent us useful resources and even gave us an assignment to help us practice and learn.

My most memorable moment: Agoda hosts many employee engagement events, like town halls and aGROWda (link to blog). My favorite was Supply Central Recognition Week (link to LinkedIn post) when we gathered for snacks and awards for outstanding achievements. It showed how much Agoda appreciates its employees.

Full Stack Software Engineer Intern, Supply Discount Development Team

Life at Agoda is fantastic! People here are very friendly and kind. I love that there are people from around the world, and we respect each other just as we are.

I was assigned to the Yield Control System (YCS) team, which manages property details, rates, and availability on Agoda’s website. I worked as a full stack developer within the Supply Discount Development team, and my responsibilities included improving the UX/UI of YCS websites and querying data for analysis to help drive decisions on enhancements.

Although I didn’t master every technical task, particularly querying data, my team strongly encouraged me to take these challenges as a chance to learn and provided excellent advice. My mentor gave my team valuable insights for tasks that required an understanding of architecture and business aspects, making our work far more straightforward.

My most memorable moment: At the start, I’d just met my teammates, my mentor, my product owner, and my manager, and we all enjoyed lunch together. It was a very warm welcome to the team.

Supply Operations Intern, Supply Operations

During my internship with the Supply Operations team, I focused on the ‘Test-Booking’ project, which aids the sales team in negotiating pricing with hotels. I learned many new skills, like teamwork, stakeholder management, and high-level presentation delivery. On the technical side, I also gained proficiency in CRM tools like HubSpot and further refined my Microsoft Excel skills.

The mentorship I received was invaluable. Though I started without experience in CRM tools, I was taught everything from the basics to an intermediate level, including managing tickets and creating workflows. Agoda’s culture is fast-paced yet flexible. The people here are helpful and strive to get things done quickly, but you’re trusted to manage your time. My favorite aspect of working here is the supportive environment, including a great team that is always approachable for work and friendly chats. Plus, the office space is modern and well-equipped, with free boba tea on occasion!

My most memorable moment: Our team-building trip to Hua Hin, where we played board games, swam, and sang karaoke, all while spending quality time together. Despite having only joined the team two weeks prior, they welcomed me warmly and made me feel like a part of the group.
