Hi, I’m Bruno Dos Santos, a Senior Engineering Manager at Agoda. My journey with Agoda began back in 2016 when I joined as a backend engineer in the tag search team. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to grow and now lead several key organizations, including accommodation search, pricing, and white labels. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’d like to share a bit about what it’s like to work here.
The Role and Challenges of a Back-end Engineer
The environment here is dynamic and fast-paced, with each team facing unique challenges. We have two main types of teams: platform teams and horizontal teams.
As part of a platform team, I’ve worked on building highly scalable applications that can handle the massive traffic we experience. It’s crucial to keep the code simple so that it can be easily contributed to by various horizontal teams across the company. On the flip side, being part of a horizontal team offers broad exposure to all of Agoda’s systems, providing a comprehensive understanding of our operations and allowing for impactful contributions.
One of the most exciting challenges I’ve faced is working on our price calculation system, which handles 20 million price calculations every second. At this scale, traditional solutions like auto-scaling or retries just don’t cut it. We have to explore technology at its deepest level to make the right choices and build architectures that can scale for the future.
