From the UK to Bangkok: This is Lisa’s Life at Agoda
- Lisa Williams
- Senior Counsel, IP team
- Living in Bangkok, Thailand since 2024
Before joining Agoda, I worked as a Counsel in Intellectual Property at a fast-paced fashion company in London, UK. While I enjoyed my role, I wanted to combine my love for travel with an opportunity to progress in my career. After doing some research into what Agoda is like, and seeing the global reach and positive work environment, it felt like the perfect fit, and a fantastic opportunity to grow and push myself out of my comfort zone.
A Day in the Life of an IP Lawyer at Agoda
My role involves advising the business on intellectual property matters. My role includes reviewing marketing campaigns, filing trademark applications, advising on AI, all whilst ensuring that the Agoda brand is being protected. I am also fortunate to be able to collaborate with a variety of different teams across the business to solve challenges and provide insights into the importance of IP at Agoda.
One of my most impactful projects was expanding Agoda’s trademark portfolio. I worked closely with senior stakeholders to understand and shape Agoda’s strategy for the next 3-5 years and successfully broadened out our trademark protection to cover our core and future goods and services. Ultimately, our trademark protection ensures that consumers can trust the quality and authenticity of products associated with the Agoda brand. This work has helped protect the brand and made a meaningful difference in how we operate globally.
Why Agoda is an Exciting Workplace
Agoda’s work environment is dynamic and inclusive. I work with talented colleagues from all over the world with diverse backgrounds, which has broadened my perspective and enriched my experience. Everyone at Agoda is approachable and incredibly supportive; which has contributed to a positive and collaborative atmosphere at work.
I really appreciate the responsibility I’ve been given in my role, I feel valued and trusted to make decisions that have a real impact on the business.
Growing at Agoda: Learning and Thriving
Agoda offers plenty of opportunities for personal and professional growth. The autonomy I’ve been given has allowed me to push myself out of my comfort zone and develop new skills.
I have become more thoughtful and concise in the way I approach tasks, and this has ensured that I am making informed decisions that will assist the business in achieving their goals. I can honestly say that Agoda has helped me feel more confident in my professional abilities and I’m excited to see how my role will grow and develop!
Relocating to Bangkok: A Smooth Transition
I relocated from the UK to Bangkok for the warm weather, lower cost of living, and the opportunity to travel. The relocation process was smooth, thanks to Agoda’s friendly and helpful support. Agoda provided clear guidance every step of the way, which made the transition much easier than I’d anticipated.
For anyone considering relocating to Bangkok, my advice is to pack light because there are a lot of amazing shopping options but make sure to include a jacket, the air conditioning indoors can be surprisingly chilly!
Living in Bangkok: A City Full of Possibilities
Bangkok offers an incredible lifestyle with something for everyone. I love exploring the city’s amazing restaurants, shopping malls, and vibrant culture.
I also enjoy exploring new coffee and brunch spots. My favorite area is Phrom Phong, where my perfect day includes waking up, going to a spin class, going for brunch then shopping in one of the amazing malls like Emquartier or Emsphere (usually both)!
The ease of travel from Bangkok makes it simple and quick to visit other parts of Thailand and Asia, adding to the city’s appeal. Since I moved to Bangkok, I’ve traveled to Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and India, and I still have many more places on my list to visit!
Bangkok’s dynamic energy and endless opportunities make it a truly exciting place to live.
Building Community in Bangkok: Settling in and Making Connections
Settling into Agoda and Bangkok was easier than I expected. The people I have met here are incredibly friendly and welcoming, which helped me feel instantly at home. I’ve had the opportunity to make wonderful friends both inside and outside of Agoda. Agoda also has a lot of social clubs that organize events for new joiners and there are opportunities to be involved in outside sporting events like Agoda Badminton and football.
If you’re nervous about starting fresh in a new city or workplace, my advice is to be open to trying new things. Get involved in activities you wouldn’t normally do, and you’ll find yourself building meaningful connections in no time.
Cost of Living in Bangkok: Affordable and Flexible
Compared to London, the cost of living in Bangkok is much lower. However, like any global city, expenses can vary depending on your lifestyle, and Bangkok offers a variety of lifestyle options.
Rent for a 1 bedroom in the heart of London varies but you are looking at anything upwards from 1,500 GBP (~67k THB) per month, while in Bangkok you are closer to 800 GBP (~35k THB). My spin classes cost around 10 GBP per class (450 THB), whereas in London it is around 20 GBP (900 THB) per class. The cost of lunches and dinners does vary, but generally Bangkok is cheaper than London, if you like fine dining. There are of course expensive places to try in Bangkok, but on average, the cost of going out for food most days is feasible compared to in London.
Final Thoughts: Why Agoda is the Place to Be
Agoda is a fantastic place to work and learn. It offers a unique opportunity to grow professionally, meet inspiring people, and experience life in a vibrant city. The most rewarding part of my journey has been meeting new people and building meaningful connections. If you’re looking for a challenging yet fulfilling career, Agoda is the place to be.
