My Agoda Story

From Singapore to Bangkok: This Is Alvin’s Life at Agoda

  • Living in Bangkok, Thailand since 2024

Before joining Agoda, I worked as a technical project manager in a logistics company in Singapore. My main responsibilities revolved around client management and technical (API-related) integration. In the logistics industry, where parcels move every second, I was constantly solving bugs, addressing issues, and managing escalations. Despite the fast-paced nature of the work, I genuinely enjoyed learning about API logic and the problem-solving aspect of my role.

After several years in the logistics industry in Singapore, I was offered the opportunity to join Agoda in Bangkok. The deciding factors for me were the chance to relocate and Agoda’s multicultural environment. Having spent my entire life in Singapore, I was eager to move out of the small city-state and experience life in a bigger country. Agoda offered me that opportunity, and I haven’t looked back since.

A Day in My Life at Agoda in the Travel Distribution Team

My current role is part of the Travel Distribution Team under Rocket Travel by Agoda, the company’s B2B arm. My day-to-day work at Agoda consists of 70% technical and 30% commercial responsibilities.

– 70% Tech: I act as the technical point of contact for B2B partners, resolving issues, managing incidents, and following up on new project features.

– 30% Commercial: I collaborate with account managers from our B2B team to maintain strong relationships with partners and explore ways to grow our partners’ growth with Agoda.

Why Agoda is an Exciting Workplace

What makes Agoda’s working environment special for me is the opportunity to work and learn alongside colleagues from all over the world. The diversity of cultures and perspectives is truly an eye-opener and has enriched my professional and personal growth.

Agoda also offers competitive compensation, travel discounts, and wellness programs, which I really appreciate. For example, in addition to our hybrid work program (2 days in office and 3 days working from home), I really love Agoda’s Remote Work program which allows me to go back to Singapore while working from there. This gives me some flexibility to visit families and friends, while continuing to stay productive at work.

Another great aspect about working here is how Agoda encourages us to take ownership of new ideas. If you have an idea, you’re empowered to run with it and see it through. For example, I have recently worked on a project to create a portal for B2B partners. This will allow our B2B partners to be able to look at various performance matrixes and better manage bookings.

Growing at Agoda: Opportunities to Explore and Thrive

Agoda supports work-life balance, which I believe is essential for long-term career growth. Flexible work arrangements allow me to stay productive and focused while maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life.

Additionally, Agoda makes it easy to explore new roles through internal transfers across teams, departments, and even global offices. This simple process allows any employees to broaden their expertise and explore new opportunities, should they want to.

Relocation to Bangkok: A Seamless Move to a Familiar Destination

As a Singaporean, Bangkok has always been a popular destination due to its proximity (just a 2-hour flight). Not to mention its incredible shopping and food at affordable prices. Relocating to Bangkok has been a dream for many Singaporeans, and I was fortunate to make it a reality.

My relocation experience was both exciting and nerve-wracking, despite having visited Bangkok many times before. Thankfully, Agoda made the process smooth and stress-free. They provided me with one month of fully paid accommodation at a 5-star hotel in the city center near the office, giving me ample time to find my own place.

For anyone considering relocating to Bangkok for Agoda, my advice is to bring only your essential items. Non-essentials can easily be replaced in Bangkok, and most condominiums come fully furnished. All you need is yourself and your clothes to settle into your new home.

The Bangkok Lifestyle & Quality of Life

Living in Bangkok has been a transformative experience for me. The variety of food is incredible, ranging from Thai to Korean, Japanese, and more. I’ve also found that my quality of life has greatly improved. I even adopted three cats who keep me company!

Thai people are incredibly friendly and polite, even if you don’t speak the language. Thailand truly lives up to its reputation as the “Land of Smiles.”

One of my favorite activities is taking an evening walk home from the office, which is about 5 kilometers. It’s fascinating to watch the city transition from a bustling hub to a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere as shops close for the day. On weekends, I enjoy grocery shopping and spending time with my furry friends.

Settling In: Smooth Experience from Day 1

Settling into Agoda was a smooth experience from Day 1. My team was welcoming and helpful, making me feel at home right away.

Settling into Bangkok has also been an amazing experience. I’ve had the chance to explore local places and try different foods, all of which are easily accessible. My advice to anyone starting fresh in a new city is to not be shy about speaking to people. Don’t worry if you can’t speak the local language—just give it a try. Language barriers are rarely an issue if you make an effort.

Cost of Living in Bangkok: Affordable and Comfortable

The cost of living in Bangkok is significantly lower compared to Singapore. For just SGD 2, I can enjoy a delicious lunch, whereas in Singapore, I’d need at least SGD 5 for a meal.

Rent is also much more affordable, and a night out doesn’t cost nearly as much as it does in Singapore. Additionally, fresh produce is available at low prices in supermarkets.

Overall, I have no regrets about joining Agoda and relocating to Bangkok. I’ve gained insights into the city that I wouldn’t have known as a tourist. My only regret is not making the move sooner!

Final Thoughts: Why Agoda is the Place to Be

If you’re considering joining Agoda in Bangkok, I’d say go for it! You’ll have the chance to work with talented, ambitious people in a multicultural environment while living in one of the most vibrant and affordable cities in the world.

The most rewarding part of my journey at Agoda has been the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. From learning new skills to building meaningful relationships, Agoda has truly been a life-changing experience for me.
